In Memory of Dr. Stephen Chan

Dear Dr. Stephen Chan,

On behalf of the General Education Team of HKU CEDARS, I’d like to express our extreme grief of your passing and extend our deepest condolences to your family.

We have been so grateful for your generous and passionate contributions in education, particularly establishing the General Education Unit in HKU back in 1995. Much thanks to your visions and hard works, as well as your successor Dr. Albert Chau, GE has laid a very solid foundation in providing a uniqueand inspiring learning platform. No credits and non-compulsory but lots and lots of passionate students have joined the wide variety of programmes and classes. Many students have said those were some of their most memorable moments and even life changing experiences in their campus lives. In short, you put idealism and romanticism in practices and provided an alternative perspective of learning for university students

And later on, you did it in HKBU too.

More different young minds have been inspired by your interdisciplinary and hybridised education philosophy.

In fact, iwas also your kind invitation for me in the late 90s to curate and teach music and culture series in both HKU and HKBU. Your total freedom and trust did encourage and facilitate many fun-filled yet inventive courses, including outside classroom events such as concerts and live house experiences.

Without your continuous and unfailing endeavours, many of us would not have rediscovered so many new grounds in teaching and learning, and above all, rethinking and redefining what life is about. For me, moving on from a Pro DJ/Part-time GE teacher to a Full-time GE Head/Part-time DJ in the past decade, was truly an amazing life journey.

I could not thank you enough for the wonderful stories and gratifications of nurturing young people all these years.

Now I know you are just resting somewhere and you could hear and see us better in that horizons. May you please keep blessing us to carry on with our missions of education in these unprecedentedly challenging times.

Yours truly,

Chi Chung
